This guide will give you the tools that you need to troubleshoot a nonfunctional Nine Stars automated garbage can.

Overview

If you have a Nine Stars trash can, or any other trash can with an automated lid/sensor pairing, we’ll take you through common troubleshooting steps. These steps will carry over into other trash cans as well, in case you’re not a proud owner of Nine Stars cans. So, let’s get going on typical trash can issues.

Common issues

If you’re experiencing issues with a NST garbage can sensor not working, a good first step is their website, which has user manuals for every one of their models, past and present. Going through and discovering additional steps to working with your can model might make things a little bit easier going, but otherwise, you can follow the steps below to troubleshoot.

Lid doesn’t open

If you’re confronted with the most common and frustrating of automated garbage can issues, don’t lose hope. Your trash can sensor might not be working. Here’s some good steps to take:

  • Ensure that the power is on by doing a cycling through of the power button.
  • Check the batteries on the side or rear of the can sensor to ensure that the can is getting enough power to work.
  • If the sensor seems to be reading inconsistently, give it a gentle wipedown with a piece of damp cloth and allow it to dry. Afterwards, reset it to make sure everything is working properly.

If your trashcan sensor isn't giving a consistent reading, it may be time to troubleshoot your touchless trashcan. Check out our informative guides!

If your trash can isn’t closing properly, there’s likely a few issues that could be the culprit:

  • Check the hinges, as well as the seal of the garbage can to determine if there’s debris or something blocking the lid from closing.
  • Check the batteries on the side or rear of the can sensor to ensure that the can is getting enough power to work.
  • Press the “open/close” button to see if that solves the problem.

Red LED or slow-closing lid

If your Nine Stars trash can sensor is giving you a red LED, that likely means the can is experiencing some kind of error. But, in most cases, a red light means that you need to replace the batteries.

Warranty

Nine Stars products have a warranty that protects the electronic mechanisms of the trash can, including the lid. If you haven’t modified or altered the lid with some kind of homebrewed solution, you should be able to send the can (though shipping costs are your responsibility), and they can do repairs. See the product manual for warranty information, as well as Nine Stars trashcan troubleshooting tips.
